British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) offer one of the most tranquil dive vacation opportunities in Caribbean. On land, visitors can relax in hotels that are no higher than the surrounding palm trees, never spot a traffic light and stroll without worry through crime-free towns. And nature does its job to keep the peace underwater, too. The clusters of islands tat make up the BVI protect the waters from strong winds and currents. But serenity does not mean the diving is dull. The BVI offers some finest dive sites, including shallow reefs for beginners and plunging walls for the more advanced. Local dive operators have scouted out the best location and can offer multiday packages that let divers customize the itinerary.  A few sites are perennial favorites. The RMS Rhone, which is now part of the BVI National Parks Trust, once carried 313 passengers for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. A hurricane in 1867 snapped the ship in two and dropped it to the sand 80 feet below the surface off Salt Island. Blonde Rock, a pinnacle between dead Chest and Salt Island, rises 60 feet from the ocean floor to 15 feet below the surface. Reef fish, fan corals, lobsters and crabs cling to its rock ledges, tunnels, caves and overhangs. Alice in Wonderland, named after huge mushroom-shaped corals, is best for experienced divers, with its sloping wall stretching 100 feet below the surface.

Aqua Venture of Road Town limits its dive tours to 8 participants. Aqua Venture tours at 10:30am and often stop at Rhone and Blonde Rock, as well as the wreck of Inganess Bay, which sunk in Hurricane Bertha two years ago. Rates for tours, which include tanks and weights, are $80 for a two-tank morning dive, $60 for a one-tank afternoon dive and $60 for a night dive. A package of three two-tank dives is $210 and five two-tank dives are $325, including a free night dive. Snorkelers can ride along to two morning sites for $30 and one afternoon site for $20. New divers can take a one-dive resort course for $90, or add two more dives for $120. PADI and NAUI certification is $350, and a package of open-water referral dives is $225.

Baskin in the Sun has two Tortola locations: Prospect Reef and Soperís Hole Marina. This dive operator not only teaches people to dive, but also teaches them about the underwater world. To coincide with coral spawning, which occurs after the August full moon, Baskin in the Sun is offering 7-night packages starting August 12. They include 10 day dives, a one-tank night dive and a three-tank all-night dive on August 14. A marine biologist will be onboard to hold a coral spawning seminar. The package also includes accommodations at Prospect Reef, a fish identification course, and underwater slate and membership in the Reef Environmental Educational Foundation (REEF). The rate is $1,105 per person double. Baskin in the Sunís daily two-tank morning dives depart at 8:30 and cost $80; the one-tank afternoon dives depart at 2:30 and cost $60. A six-tank dive package is $216, and a 10-tank package is $320.
