Secluded Rendezvous, St. Lucia
For Caribbean-bound travelers who are resisting a stay at all-inclusive hotel, believing that such resorts offer nothing but cheerleading social directors and all-night toga parties, Rendezvous resort might be just the property to restore your faith. A couples-only resort, Rendezvous offers serene relaxation on St. Lucia’s Malabar Beach. Built in 1930 as the vacation home of owner Craig Bernard’s family, the property has undergone a series of incarnations, first as the Malabar Beach hotel, then as Couples St. Lucia. In 1993 it became Rendezvous.
Rendezvous is a romantic haven designed exclusively for couples. About 40 percent of the guests are from the U.S., the remainder are Europeans. The resort offers a series of wedding packages.
Rendezvous offers 100 air-conditioned rooms and suites in five categories: gardenview, oceanfront, oceanfront suites, seaside suites and cottages. The eight cottages date back from the resort'’ Malabar Hotel days. All rooms offer a king-size, four-poster bed; a balcony or terrace; hair dryer; and clock radio. Standard rooms overlook the carefully tended gardens, which are dotted with hammocks for two. Seaside suites front the gardens and free-form pool, and feature light-wood décor and pastel accents. Oceanfront rooms have French doors that open onto the beach, and hammock swings that invite afternoon catnaps.

Many guests seem content to while away the day on the resort’s 350-yeard white sand beach. A variety of land and water sports are available, including tennis, basketball, cycling and volleyball. Golf is offered at nearby course at supplemental fee. A small fitness gazebo has free weights, stationary bikes and treadmills. Watersports include kayaking, waterskiing and diving. Although Rendezvous doesn’t offer snorkeling, guests can spend the day at its nearby sister property, LeSport, enjoying activities, as well as spa treatments and dining privileges.
Rendezvous has an activity pool and a free-form pool with a swim-up bar. In addition to the swim-up/beach bar, open from 10am to 5pm, drinks are available at the Terrace Bar from noon to 1am and at the Piano Bar, which opens at 10pm.
Rendezvous offers the Terrace restaurant, which
overlooks the beach and serves three buffet-style meals daily plus afternoon
tea; and the Trysting Place, a more elegant, a la carte venue, open for dinner.
The food at the Terrace is very good. At breakfast, a la carte items can be
ordered. Lunch and dinner include at least two hot entrees, such as fish and
chips and island-style roti, and a salad bar, soup, vegetables, pasta and
pastries and ice cream for desert. While the food will please many tastes, the
emphasis is on quality, not quantity. The French-influenced cuisine offered at
the Trysting Place is excellent and attentively served. Rendezvous holds a
dinner barbecue on Wednesdays and on Saturdays.
Rendezvous currently operates a dining exchange programme with its sister hotel, The BodyHoliday at LeSPORT. This allows guests to sample the Cariblue Restaurant’s excellent cuisine and atmosphere. Transfers between resorts are not included. Subject to availability.
Could be improved
Since Rendezvous is dedicated to romance but does not offer room service, a minibar in each room would be a nice touch.
The staff at the resort is friendly and efficient. Guests can arrange island tours and excursions at the front desk.
Young and old, couples seeking an intimate interlude will find all the privacy and relaxation they need at Rendezvous.
