In the active category of all-inclusive resorts the Allegro’s 300-room Caribbean Village Cancun offers travelers quality food, non-stop activities, watersports, attentive service and just a dash of hedonism.
Located midway along Cancun’s main hotel strip, Caribbean Village Cancun was recently converted back from an adults-only format to a family-friendly resort.
Clientele
Allegro positions its Caribbean Village brand to appeal to active guests seeking non-stop activities and sports at a budget rate. Singles, Couples and families are welcome.
Accommodations
Average-size standard rooms in the six-story tower are configured with either twin double beds or king, and decorated with bright colors. All have a small table and chairs, good air conditioning, purified tap water and views of either Caribbean or the lagoon. Furniture and lighting are practical and functional, although a bit dated. For those desiring a bit more space there are 11 junior suites, all corner units that feature a sitting area and balcony.
Public Areas
The large, meandering pool is the center of the daytime action, with plenty of lounges and swim-up bar to accommodate sun worshippers. The thin beach area - typical of Cancun - features several palapas for shade and a lifeguard. A snack bar/disco is located just off the pool area, and ramps are provided throughout the property for disabled patrons. The upcoming $1,4 million renovation will involve a redesign of the lobby area (which hopefully will add air conditioning), the addition of a sports bar and Little Village Club for kids, and a refurbishment of the beach club.
"Hyperactive" and "Wide ranging" are apt descriptions of the place and breadth of activities available at the resort. The multilingual activities staff leads the way with daytime poolside games, dancing, aqua aerobics, water volleyball and tennis. Books, board games, basketballs and volleyballs are also available, while classes in scuba, Spanish and tropical dance are taught throughout the day. All nonmotorized watersports (snorkeling, kayaking, pedal boats and windsurfing) are included in the all-inclusive rate are offered at nearby Aquaworld - a first-rate operation staffed by safety-minded, efficient instructors. Scuba, jet skis and waterskiing are available for an extra charge.
For nightlife, the on-site disco opens at about 11pm, but guests more inclined to sample Cancun’s renowned discos can take advantage of the hotel’s nightly bus service into town.
A supervised kid’s club is available daily. The property is within walking distance of the Plaza Kukulcan, the largest indoor shopping mall in Cancun.
Dining
Food quality, presentation and choice epitomize Allegro’s dining experience and serve to move this product above the competition in the all-inclusive market. The open-air Calypso Restaurant is the setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets that feature varied feasts of well-prepared and eye-pleasing choices. Three specialty preparation stations provide made-to-order items.
At dinner, there is a choice of three restaurants: Firenze offers elegant Italian, Miranda’s is a carnivore delight abd La Troje offers traditional Mexican fare in a lively atmosphere.
All three are available by reservation, at no extra charge. Several bars on the property offer drinks, and a snack-bar staff cooks hamburgers and hot dogs.
Service
Allegro proves that a happy staff is a crowd pleaser. The staff is atttentive, good-humored and accommodationg.
Could be improved
The addition of fitness center would be welcome, as would grading the beach to allow for more lounging space. Music by the pool could also be toned down.
Strongest Selling Point
The combination of quality food, nonstop activities and warm, attentive service at Caribbean Village Cancun serves to set this product in a category above where its budget pricing would suggest.
