The Silk Route Rail Journey is the perfect vantage point from which to appreciate the dramatic contrasts of this vast region. Our specially equipped private trains, the "Trans-Siberian Express" and the "China Orient Express", will carry you in style and comfort where camels used to trudge.
The route lies across the territories of Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and China. For 20 days you will visit such ancient towns as Beijing, Xian, Dunhuang, Urumqi, Almaty, Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Ashgabat, Merv, Khiva, Volgograd and Moscow, with their half-familiar histories, teeming bazaars, blue-tiled mosques, gilded palaces and architectural monuments.
In Beijing we visit the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. We take some time to visit the Great Wall and the Ming Tombs near Badaling. We overnight in Xian, resting place of the Terracotta Warriors. At Dunhuang we visit the fascinating Mogao Caves,containing almost 500 grottoes filled with a collection of sculptures and murals tracing the evolution of Buddhism. The more adventurous can opt for a camel ride over to Crescent Moon Lake.
An overnight in Urumqi affords time to visit the Heavenly Lake at the foot of the Peak of God. We transfer to the Trans-Siberian Express at the Kazakh border and explore Almaty. In Uzbekistan we will spend some time in the modern capital, Tashkent, and the ancient oasis towns, Samarkand and Bukhara. Our journey includes a stop in Turkmenistan in the capital city of Ashgabat and in ancient Merv.
Switching back to Uzbekistan through Khiva and traversing Kazakhstan's Kara Kum desert, we enter Russia. In Volgograd we visit the awe-inspiring war memorial and reflect on the hundreds of thousands of lives that were lost in one of the most important battles of World War II. And finally, Moscow awaits us with an overnight at the five-star Balstchug-Kempinski and a visit to Red Square and the Kremlin.
