Duration: 5 days / 4 nights

Private tour starting from USD 630 per person for minimum 2 persons
Day 1: Arrive Chiang Mai
Arrive at Chiang Mai airport and transfer to a centrally located hotel. In the afternoon drive up to Wat Doi Suthep, one of the most revered temples of Northern Thailand. Its golden stupa, located 1056 metres above sea level is a popular pilgrimage site and offers a splendid view over Chiang Mai. Continue to tour the handicrafts workshops to see its array of woodcrafts, silk, lacquer and silverware and umbrella painting. In the evening enjoy a Northern style “Khantoke Dinner” with a hill-tribe cultural show. (D)
Day 2: Chiang Mai – Thaton
Drive to Chiang Dao Elephants Training Camp, 60km north of Chiang Mai. Start 1-hour elephant riding into the jungle. Returning to the camp, watch the elephants taking their morning bath in the running stream before starting their day’s training and work. Enjoy a peaceful bamboo rafting down the Mae Ping river for one hour. After lunch venture over dirt roads into the highlands surrounding Chang Dao to visit Palong and Lahu hilltribe settlements. Proceed to Thaton, a sleepy town situated on the banks of Kok River for overnight. (B/L)
Day 3: Thaton – Chiang Rai
Board a longtail boat for a 1-hour trip to Baan Mai Mok Cham village. The Kok River, winding its way across rolling hills, offers some of the most beautiful river cruises in Northern Thailand. Proceed to visit Baan Lorcha, a community based development project offering interesting insights into the life of the Akha hilltribe. Continue to Mae Salong, a mountain village with an intriguing history. Founded by members of Chinese Kuomintang, the village has once been a stronghold of cross-border opium trading. The Chinese character of the settlement has remained and Mandarin is still spoken, but tea plantations and herbal gardens have long since replaced the opium crops. Continue to Chiang Rai for overnight. (B/L)
Day 4: Golden Triangle
Enjoy a scenic ride over winding roads to Doi Tung where various crop substitution projects have been initiated by HRH the Princess Mother of Thailand. Once the expanse of opium fields, the mountainsides have been transformed into agricultural land where local people benefit of a remarkable turn-around in environment and lifestyle. Visit Doi Tung Villa and enjoy a stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens of Ma Fang Luang. Proceed to Mae Sai, Thailand’s northern-most town and a bustling market place. Continue to the Golden Triangle, marking the border between Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, to visit the Opium Museum and to enjoy a short boat ride on the mighty Mekong River. Overnight at the Golden Triangle. (B/L)
Day 5: Depart Chiang Rai (Optional Extension to Laos, see page 63)
In the morning transfer to Chiang Rai Airport for flight to Bangkok. (B)
